Abstract

Why are there so many standards?

Sayings about standards abound. There are standards for almost anything you can think of in the data world. From country names to units of measure, formats for data and even methods for doing business at least one standard and often many have been written. Why?

This talk will focus on why there are so many standards, how we can navigate our way through them and pitfalls to be avoided.


Presenter

Trudy Curtis is the Chief Executive Officer of the PPDM Association, the global Not-For-Profit society focused on building a global community of data professionals, developing best practices and standards for data, and on professional development and certification for data professionals. Based in Calgary, Canada, Curtis has over four decades of years of industry experience and is known around the world for her outspoken advocacy of data standards, data as a strategic asset, and data management as a core business function.

After receiving a BSc. from the University of Calgary in 1978, Curtis went to work in the Oil and Gas industry. In 1996, she joined PPDM as architect, CIO and ultimately CEO of the PPDM Association. Trudy Curtis has led the way to the recognition of data as a critical strategic asset, and the emergence of data management as a globally recognized professional discipline.
